Emily Murphy is an attorney practicing in the firm’s Charlotte, North Carolina office. Emily joined Murphy & Grantland from a regional defense firm in Charlotte where she concentrated her practice on insurance coverage, professional liability, and business & commercial litigation. Emily also has experience representing clients in appellate cases in both North Carolina and South Carolina and has presented oral argument before the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

Prior to private practice, Emily completed a federal clerkship with the Honorable Clifton L. Corker, U.S. District Judge, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, where she gained valuable experience performing complex legal research and drafting in a myriad of civil and criminal cases. Prior to her clerkship, Emily also completed multiple legal internships across Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, including in the in-house legal department for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. With a passion for analytical writing, Emily took third place in the Center for Alcohol Policy’s 13th Annual Writing Competition in 2020 with her essay, “Are the 2020s Truly ‘Unprecedented’ Times?: How America’s Alcohol History Can Inform Government Health Policy During the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Emily received her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law. During her time in Athens, she served as the Vice President of the Christian Legal Society and Executive Editor of the Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law. Emily was voted Most Valuable Executive Board Member by the Journal’s Editor in Chief and Executive Managing Editor, and her note, “Mind Your Businesses: Why Georgia Companies Should Worry About European Privacy Law,” was published in Volume 47 of the Journal.

Emily is licensed to practice law in North Carolina, South Carolina, and her home state of Tennessee. In her free time, she enjoys listening to country music, solving sudoku puzzles and playing chess, and playing doubles tennis with her husband.
